As a biological concept, the term adult refers to a human or animal that is one that has completely grown. The term "adult" is often used in the context of human beings to refer to moral and social concepts. As opposed to a "non-adult" or "minor", a legal adult is a person who is at the point of majority. They are considered to be independent, self-sufficient, and accountable. The word "major" can be used to describe them. 18 is the typical legal age for adulthood but this could vary based on the country of origin and status in law, and also mental maturity.

The stage of development for humans in which full mental and physical maturity is attained. Commonly, adulthood begins around age 21 or 20. Middle age starts at about 40 years old and is followed by the old age of about 60. The adulthood process is split into three stages beginning with early adulthood (18-mid-30s) between mid-30s and the mid-60s and late adulthood mid-60s until the time of death. It is the time to complete physical development at the point we are in the early years of adulthood (20-40s) but height and weight might increase slightly. As we grow older, we are at the highest level of physical abilities.
